Deep Dive into Veeam Backup for M365

On 21stAugust 2025, MultiThread ICT Solutions hosted yet another engaging andinsightful online masterclass, this time diving deep into data protectionwith Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365. If you missed it, don’t worry, here’sa full recap of what transpired.

The session kicked off with a warm welcome from Nora Saamaa Adu-Gyempeh, who reminded participants why Microsoft 365 has become the backbone of productivity for businesses worldwide and why protecting its critical data is non-negotiable. From emails to Teams chats, SharePoint, and OneDrive, our organizations’ daily lifelines live on this platform. But while Microsoft ensures service availability, the responsibility for data protection lieswith us.

That’swhere the Veeam Backup comes in.

Ourfacilitator, Kwaku Odei Asare, took over with an engaging presentationon why every organization should consider Veeam as part of their dataprotection strategy. He explained that while many assume “Microsoft has uscovered,” the truth is the shared responsibility model means Microsoftsecures the infrastructure, but customers must secure their own data.

Some ofthe key risks highlighted included:

  • Accidental deletion of files or emails.
  • Ransomware and security threats can spread into the cloud.
  • Malicious insider activity (e.g., disgruntled employees deleting data).
  • Compliance requirements, especially in regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and education.

When itcomes to Understanding Veeam’s Value

Kwakubroke down Veeam’s comprehensive data protection ecosystem:

  • Reliable backups & instant recovery across cloud, virtual, physical, and SaaS environments.
  • Granular recovery restores not an entire mailbox but a single email, chat, or file.
  • Ransomware protection with immutability, ensuring backups can’t be tampered with.
  • Monitoring & analytics through Veeam ONE to detect issues early.
  • Disaster recovery orchestration, so teams don’t just have backups but also predictable recovery plans.

Mostimportantly, Veeam fits neatly into the Microsoft ecosystem, supportingExchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Teams  with seamless integration.

TheLive Demo: From Backup to Restore

Theory isgood, but seeing Veeam in action was the real highlight. Kwaku walkedparticipants through a live demo where he:

  1. Added an organization in Veeam’s console and configured backup settings.
  2. Created a repository (in this case on local storage) to store the backups.
  3. Set up a backup job for selected users (Nora and Beatrice, in the demo).
  4. Showed how deleted emails could be permanently removed from Outlook and then instantly restored using Veeam.

Withinminutes, the deleted emails reappeared in the mailbox, illustrating the powerof granular recovery and the peace of mind it provides IT admins.

Licensing & Deployment Options

Participants also learned how flexible Veeam licensing is: one user = one license, covering that user’s mailbox, OneDrive, and SharePoint data. Licenses can bereassigned if a user leaves, and customers can choose between subscription, rental, evaluation, or not-for-resale (NFR) licenses.

Deploymentoptions are equally versatile:

  • Cloud-only (Veeam Data Cloud)
  • On-premises in your own data center
  • Hybrid, combining the best of both worlds

The session concluded with Nora emphasizing why MultiThread ICT runs these masterclasses: not just to sell solutions, but to equip businesses with the right knowledge to make informed decisions. Participants were also encouraged to complete the post-event survey, sharing their challenges and suggesting future topics.

Her final words summed it up best:

“Data protection doesn’t have to be scary and with the right tools, it can even be simple.”

Final Thoughts

This masterclass was more than just a product showcase. It was a practical reminder of why data is the lifeblood of modern businesses and why leaving it unprotected is simply too risky.
